What Window Treatments are Best for Your Children’s Safety?

Window Treatments

Fall. Halloween. Spiced lattes. Pumpkins and hayrides in Denton. These are all events we associate with October. Do you know what else October is famous for?

It’s National Window Covering Safety Month.

I know, I know, the topic probably doesn’t whip you into excitement liked a spiced coffee and a hayride can, but it’s much, MUCH more important.

It’s about our children’s (and grandchildren’s) safety!

Did you know that corded window coverings are one of the TOP 5 hidden hazards in American homes? (According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.)

Even if you think your corded window treatments are out of reach, you’d be shocked by the ideas children — even babies — can cook up when they’re curious.

Corded window treatments are a strangulation risk. Always.

What Window Treatments are BEST for Our Children’s Safety?

Cordless options are the single, most-effective way to avoid an accident. Below you’ll find a list for the cordless or motorized treatments we offer at Made in the Shade North Dallas Fort Worth.

However, keep in mind that whoever you choose to supply your window treatments may or may not offer the same options. Always ask!

Shades: MOST but not all

AVOID: Pleated shades and woven wood shades. Although we have cordless options, we do not suggest these for homes with children. The cord that connects the pleats/woven wood can still post a strangulation hazard.

Cordless roman shades are OK for kid-friendly spaces.

Blinds: NONE

Although we offer several cordless and motorized blinds options, we do not suggest blinds for homes with children. The cord that attaches the vanes can still post a strangulation hazard.

Even when cordless, blinds are NOT child-safe.

Shutters: ALL

All plantation shutters are safe for children, since there are no cords involved!

Plantation shutters make this a safe place for kids’ coloring and crafts!

Drapes and Side Panels: MOST

We offer a free cordless lift with all of our soft treatments. We’ll ask you during our in-home consultation if this is a feature you’ll need.

Nearly sheer, cordless drapes.

Faux Iron Grilles: MOST

Faux iron grilles are a great option for those windows you might not want to block at all. You can use faux iron grilles as a child-safe design option. Just make sure the design doesn’t have any head-sized holes in it. This is a great example:

When in doubt, speak up when discussing options with your window treatment professional. OR, look for the “Best for Kids” certification on retail products.

Lastly, I want to share a quick special we’re running this month. To keep you and yours safe…

We’re offering a COMPLIMENTARY cordless lift on select shades through November 16, 2018.
