5 Beautiful Window Treatments That Won’t Block Your Views

2019 Design Trends, Window Treatments

Our little area of North Texas has some amazing vistas. Enjoying the landscapes as I drive to and from my clients’ homes is one of the best things about my job. Often, I visit homes with breathtaking views of Lake Lewisville or private pastures graced by the occasional white-tailed deer. These little spots of beauty are abundant in our area if you look for them.

Many of my clients place a high value on being able to see and enjoy the scenery outside their windows. In many cases, they paid a premium for it. Understandably, they’re reluctant to install window treatments that could potentially interfere with their views. Yet, the need for light control and UV protection for their belongings is too great to ignore. For others, the room just feels unfinished without a window treatment tying everything together.

When I consult with clients who are hesitant to obstruct their views with window treatments, they’re often quite relieved to learn there are many beautiful window treatment options that can leave all or most of the view from their windows unobstructed. It’s true! You can have your cake and eat it, too — at least when it comes to window coverings.

Here are my five favorite window treatment options that won’t block your views.

Roller Shades

Norman Roller Shade Living Room

This option comes in varying levels of light control and privacy. If privacy is no concern, sheer roller shades enable you to see outside even when the shade is down. Or you can choose light filtering, room darkening or blackout and still enjoy the views during the day because roller shades are barely noticeable when open all the way.

Drapery Panels

For windows with ample wall space on each side, consider hanging drapes on extra-long drapery rods that extend far beyond the left and right sides of each window. This way the drapes completely clear the windows when open, granting full views from your window during the daytime and complete privacy and light control when you need it. I especially like this solution for bedrooms because it’s completely private and helps keep the room warm, too.

Woven-wood Shades

This is another type of shade that is virtually unnoticeable when open. Pair it with sheer drapery panels to diffuse light and gain a bit of privacy without sacrificing your views. The soft sheers also tone down the more masculine woven-wood shades, creating an of-the-moment combination that works especially well in spaces with casual, cottage or bohemian vibes.

Layered Shades

For a modern home, consider layered shades. When in the down position, this style allows for sneak peeks of your view without losing privacy or light control; but, when raised, layered shades provide a perfectly open view of your window and the visuals beyond it. The also have consistent cord lengths for a clean look, or you can opt to motorize them for efficiency and safety when little ones are around.

Cellular Shades with Trilight®

This window treatment option is like two window treatments in one — a private, energy-efficient cellular shade (choose from light filtering or blackout) on the bottom half of your window and a sheer Trilight shade on the top half. The best part is either portion can be extended across the entire window, so you can choose to enjoy the view or completely block prying eyes.
