3 Bad Situations Window Treatments Prevent

2018 Design Trends, Tips & Resources, Window Treatments

Though most of our clients are furnishing new homes, every so often we get called in to fix bad situations. Fortunately (or unfortunately), these situations were easily preventable — if only someone had shared the right advice early on!

To help you avoid making the same simple mistakes, here are a few cautionary tales…

Roller Shades North DFW

  1. Preserving the View… But Not Your Interior

Having floor-to-ceiling windows and a lake view is paradise, and if you have a private lot, why not keep the windows undressed?

This was precisely the thought of one of our clients, but she didn’t foresee this unintended consequence…

Her gorgeous white couch turned YELLOW.

It’s easy to fall in love with the view and want to keep it front-and-center all day long, but UV damage is real. While her couch was the first place to show signs of damage, the sun also wreaks havoc on floors (especially hardwoods, but carpet too!), walls, and more.

We Suggest: Sheer shades, roller shades (in sheer), and solar shades are two great options for enjoying the sunshine and the view without compromising your interior.

Cellular Shades Little Elm

  1. Not Covering Windows in Unexpected or Unused Spaces

When one of our clients was walking us through her home, we noticed some light coming from the closet. Closer inspection revealed 3 windows… facing west.

This adds up to several daily hours of Texas sun!

If you’re thinking that your closet doesn’t need shade, don’t be fooled. Everything the sun touches can be damaged — even your clothes will start to fade!

We Suggest: Getting some treatments on those windows is a low-cost investment to protect your home and the things in it. Fortunately, nearly any treatment will do in this space; it just depends on your preferences for light control, look, and insulation.

White Wood Blinds DFW

  1. Overlooking Another Surprisingly Sun-Sensitive Material

No one wants to work in a dark kitchen, and if you have a nice window, a view, and some privacy, you might be tempted to leave those windows uncovered all day long.

Resist temptation!

Yes, UV rays can make woods appear faded and parched, but you may be surprised to hear that your beautiful kitchen countertops are at risk, too. Slabs of marble, granite, and other natural stones fade under sunlight without the proper protection.

The good news: Simply blocking the UV rays will go a long way toward preserving your stone surfaces.

We Suggest: To keep the view, sheer shades, roller shades (in sheer), and solar shades are great options. If you’re not usually at home during the hours of intense sun and plan to keep the windows covered, you can choose any style you like!
