Determining the Best Fabric for Your Curtains Based on Style, Location, and More

Having a difficult time determining the best fabric for your curtains?  It may surprise some that the type of fabric you choose is even more important than the color and pattern.  The material will influence your home’s overall design – and how satisfied you are with your window treatments – more than details like the pleat style or embellishments.

Durability should always be a consideration in homes with children and pets.   The more activity and exposure your window treatments experience, the stronger the fabric.  Silk curtains, for example, are susceptible to sun damage and color fading.  Silk panels won’t hold their sheen for the life of your home, no matter how well you care for them.

Tip #1: Look Closely at Your Lighting

Determine the privacy and natural light you want inside your room- this will help when choosing the curtain fabric of the proper density.  The thicker the curtain textile, the more opaque it will be, blocking more light and increasing privacy.  If you want to keep a bedroom dark for sleeping, you will want a thicker fabric, velvet or heavily lined fabrics, and a style that covers the whole window.  These fabrics will give your space a more dramatic look and feel.  On the other hand, if you want more light in your bedroom, choose a linen blend to cozy up your space.

Tip #2: Inspect Your Home’s Insulation

Consider your home’s insulation.  An insulated curtain is super hardworking.  It absorbs heat and cold air from your window, increases privacy, and softens sound.  As a result, your room will be more comfortable, and you’ll save money on your monthly energy bills.

Tip #3: Select Your Curtain’s Hanging Style

Determining Best Fabrics for Curtains

Unless you are doing cafe curtains, they should fall to the floor unless you want your draperies to look like high-water pants.  A little puddling can be nice if you want a romantic feel, but if you don’t want to worry about them dragging and getting dirty, stop the fabric just before they hit the floor — a little under an inch is good.

When determining the best fabric for your curtains, there’s much to consider.  Fabric is the most crucial part of selecting drapes, curtains, and other window treatments.  Since the material will ultimately dictate how well the window dressings will function and hold up over time, it’s essential to choose wisely after determining their purpose.  Our complimentary consultation will guide you through all of these questions and more.
