Bring the Spa Feeling Home

Each Mother’s Day, people around the country pamper the moms in their lives with breakfasts in bed, spa days and other relaxing gifts. I say: why should we moms wait to feel pampered once a year? With a few tweaks, your home can feel like a rejuvenating retreat every day.

Designing your home so it’s more spa-like will make it easier to grab quick respites from life and work anytime you feel like you need them. Take it from me, feeling more calm and centered has tremendous positive effects on your health, well being and overall effectiveness.

Setting up your home to serve as a relaxing retreat for the senses is easy to do — and it’s fashionable, too. Spa style at home is a hot trend that I, for one, hope never goes out of style.

Here’s how I like to relax all five senses while at home:

  1. Manage the noise

Block the sounds of kids, pets, lawn crews and blaring TVs with a white-noise machine stationed outside your relaxation room. If your home is already quiet, fill it with whatever style of music soothes you. I like classical such as Chopin or Debussy, but sometimes chill out to Enya, too.

  1. Make a hot drink

Bounce back from stressful days more quickly with a hot cup of chamomile tea. In a paper published in Molecular Medicine Reports, researchers found evidence that chamomile tea is effective as a mild tranquillizer and sleep inducer, in addition to helping people who suffer from anxiety.

  1. Add natural, comfortable elements

Outfit your home or relaxation area with plump, overstuffed furniture upholstered in earthy woven and nubby fabrics. And be sure to add a healthy dose of natural, tactile elements all around the space. Integrating small décor pieces like houseplants and glass jars filled with pebbles or send work well.

  1. Improve your mood through scent

I use my aromatherapy diffuser every day. At this point, I’m not sure I can live without it. When I want to unwind, I choose lavender or bergamot. When I need energy, I always reach for peppermint.

  1. Let in the light

Bring that spa feeling home by installing sheer, open-weave curtains that welcome in the light and flutter in the breeze. Don’t be afraid to hang them outdoors as well, flanking a pergola, patio or porch. My clients who take the plunge and add curtains to their outside structures are always over the moon with the results.
